Program Theme

Students will learn about how all mood-altering substances and addictive behaviors impact natural chemicals in the brain. Students will also explore how young people are a “target market” for these addictive substances and behaviors.

Program Description

During this interactive presentation, students will learn and practice “natural highs” such as meditation, exercise, writing, singing, creating, and socializing with others. Students will explore how every behavioral addiction (smart phones, gambling, eating, etc..) as well as every addictive substance (caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, etc…) hijacks these natural chemicals in our brains and rewires them over time into a state of imbalance (homeostasis). Students will learn about the history of addiction and treatment of substance use disorders in America (including Prohibition and the recent legalization of cannabis) and understand the close relationship between making money by targeting youth and the rise in people becoming addicted.
