Program Description
I am a local Capital District author and member of the Society of Children’s Books Writers and Illustrators. I currently have 12 picture books published about children with autism. I have programs that can be used to educate and enhance the life of all students who interact with peers with autism. The twelfth book in the series, “I am James”, was co-written by her then 11-year old son who does have autism. I can do presentations for kindergarten through 12th grade students, as well as professional service hours for district staff.
Another series of author visits I present are on the children who came on the Mayflower and what life was like aboard the Mayflower for all of the passengers. This presentation can be modified based on the ages of the students.
The last series of author visits that I present focus on Native American Foods and on the history of Native American boarding schools, including my experiences attending one as a seventh grader. For Native American foods there is one presentation that is geared towards 4th graders and focuses on the food of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) and an additional geared towards 7th graders that focuses on how the geography of the country impacted the different food of Native Americans throughout the country. Either of the food presentations can include an optional cooking component. The presentation on Native American boarding schools is geared more towards high school students.
