The city and town seals that are found on police cars, on street signs, in City hall and on municipal uniforms reveal the history and heritage of New York State. There are seals with Dutch symbolism, others with symbols of the Erie Canal and others that reference the municipality’s participation in the American Revolution.

Program Theme

The city and town seals that are found on police cars, on street signs, in City hall and on municipal uniforms reveal the history and heritage of New York State. There are seals with Dutch symbolism, others with symbols of the Erie Canal and others that reference the municipality’s participation in the American Revolution.

Program Description

I present a collection of seals that tell the unique heritage of New York required by the curriculum in a way that is memorable and often leads to questions about local history. It is non-fiction and also helps to explain how official symbols are chosen by our elected representatives. It explains how these symbols become the “brand” of each municipality.
