RPI – STEM Ambassadors

The Rensselaer STEM Ambassadors are an assembly of highly motivated undergraduate students focused on inspiring a younger audience to explore the role of science and engineering in society.
Rensselaer STEM Ambassadors focus specifically on basic and applied scientific & engineering topics that expand on materials being taught in 6 -12 grade schools.
Select Rensselaer undergraduate students in the School of Engineering and the School of Science, called STEM Ambassadors, have undergone extensive communications training to create captivating presentations and real life hands-on activities that focus on the exciting aspects of science, technology, engineering and math. Our visits demonstrate that being a scientist is not just sitting alone in a lab all day, but actually something that requires creativity and passion and engineers are problem solvers with the knowledge and creativity to improve our happiness, safety and health in this world.

Barbara Slate – You Can Do a Graphic Novel, Comic Book, Meme, or Zine

Students learn how to create a graphic novel beginning with a six page comic. It doesn’t matter if they can draw. Stick figures are an expressive way for the reluctant artist to begin. Participants are encouraged to bring their sketchbooks and characters they may already be working on. They will learn about The Creative Process, how to write a Character Study, focus on the beginning, middle, end and twist of a story, and Create Layouts.

If the program is an assembly, Barbara talks though the program with on-screen illustrations of the process. The school is to provide a computer, projector and screen.

Home Made Theater – A Christmas Story

In the past, student groups have enjoyed our productions of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS, MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET, THE JUNGLE BOOK, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, THE WIZARD OF OZ, OF MICE AND MEN, CHARLOTTE’S WEB, and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD among others. We hope that your school will take this opportunity to develop your student’s appreciation for the arts.
